4 Famous Tuxedo Cats You Should Know About

Posted by

Tuxedo cats are definitely one of the most charming types of cat. While they aren’t a specific breed, tuxedos all have two-toned fur, with black as their predominant color. They usually have white fur on their face and chest area, paired with white whiskers. From films to books to social media, tuxedos have taken the world by storm!

Here are 4 famous tuxedo cats you should know about.

1) Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat

First introduced to the public in 1957, the star of The Cat in the Hat is one of the most famous tuxedo cats in North America. Appropriately, the Cat wore a red bow tie and a striped hat. In his story, the Cat turns a rainy afternoon into a fun-filled playdate for two lonely children. Written as an alternative to traditional Dick and Jane readers, the Cat’s entertaining tale was an immediate success. Over 60 years later, children are still learning to read with this simple story.

2) Trixy, the devoted friend

Featured in Sam Stall’s book 100 Cats Who Changed Civilization, this tuxedo was the beloved pet of Henry Wriothesley, the third Earl of Southampton (1573-1624). Unfortunately, the Earl had a tendency to choose the wrong side in politics. When he became involved a plot to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I, he earned a life sentence in the Tower of London. Henry was imprisoned in 1601. But his cat, Trixy, became so agitated that she walked all the way from his estate to the Tower. She remained by his side until his release by James I in 1603. What a heart-warming example of loyalty!

3) Tuxedo Stan

In 2012, this Canadian tuxedo cat ran for mayor in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He founded the Tuxedo Party of Canada, a cat welfare society to draw attention to the plight of feral cats. During his run for mayor, Tuxedo Stan became an international celebrity. He was endorsed by Ellen DeGeneres and Anderson Cooper and even featured on Middle Eastern TV. Although Tuxedo Stan was not elected for mayor, the city of Halifax gave a $40,000 grant to the local SPCA. This grant enabled them to start a low-cost spay/neuter clinic. Although Tuxedo passed away from cancer in 2013, his legacy lives on in the non-profit Tuxedo Party.

4) Simon, a decorated wartime hero

This tuxedo cat was stationed on board the HMS Amethyst during the Chinese civil war. During a siege in 1949, he guarded the stored food from rats and helped save the lives of everyone on board. Unfortunately, Simon was wounded during the Yangtze Incident and returned home to a hero’s welcome. Three weeks later, he passed away and was buried with honours in the PDSA Animal Cemetery. BBC News reports, “He was posthumously awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal, the charity's animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.” Now that’s pretty impressive!
