Cat Breeds: The Siamese

Posted by

Strikingly beautiful, the Siamese cat is the descendant of temple cats in the royal court of Siam. According to legend, these cats perched on tall pillars around the king’s throne. With their strength and agility, they would pounce on potential attackers and knock them to the ground. Thankfully, our modern version of these cats are a little more friendly!

Read on to learn more about Siamese cats.

An Eastern Import

In the late 1800s, Siamese cats were first introduced to the Western world. In 1878, U. S. diplomat David Stickles, who was serving in Bangkok, sent a Siamese cat to President Rutherford Hayes and his wife Lucy. She was reportedly allowed to roam free throughout the White House, and she “particularly enjoyed making a grand entrance whenever the First Lady was entertaining guests.”

In April of 1909, the first Siamese Cat Society of America was founded.  Over the years, they became very popular around the world. In the Cat Fanciers’ Association, Siamese ranked an impressive #12 in 2017 registrations.

An Elegant Breed

This cat breed has a long, muscular body, a long tail, and a triangular head shape with tall ears. Its eyes are light blue and almond shaped. Although Siamese kittens are born completely white, they develop “point coloration” as they grow older. This means that their “points”—face, ears, tail, and feet—turn a different colour. Their faces also develop a mask of the same color in a deeper shade. Its unique coloration gives the Siamese cat a striking beauty.

A Social Butterfly

This breed is elegant, poised, and affectionate. Because of their high intelligence, Siamese cats may be trained to walk on a leash and perform other tasks. They need regular mental stimulation, such as puzzle toys and teaser toys. Siamese kitties are very vocal and will tell you, in a deep, raspy voice, exactly what they want. Extremely affectionate, they will follow you around, put their head in your lap, and (if you let them) even sleep in your bed! Siamese kitties need a lot of love and attention and can develop depression without enough social interaction. This is why owners often buy two Siamese to keep each other company.
