What Does My Cat Do When I'm Not Home?

Posted by

Q: What does my cat do when I’m not home?

A: Let’s look at a recent study to find out! In 2009, Nestlé Purina PetCare sponsored a Los Angeles study on the activities of domestic cats when they were home alone. Collar cameras were placed on fifty indoor cats. Each camera recorded an image every fifteen minutes. Here’s what researchers found out when they analyzed the images.[1]

For the cats studied, the most popular activity was looking out of windows, which accounted for 22% per cent of their time. Coming in second at 12% was interaction with other family pets. For 8% of the time, cats got their cardio in by climbing on chairs or kitty condos. What about sleeping? Having three cats herself, researcher Jill Villarreal mistakenly thought they slept all day. She was surprised to discover that cats only spent 6% of their time sleeping.

Worried that your cat might be bored? Don’t be…your cat is probably having lots of fun! The study also found that cats looked at television, DVDs, computer, or other media for 6% of the time. For another 6%, they hid under tables. They also played with toys for 5% of the time, while they either ate and looked at food for 4% of the time.
