Most likely, you’ll need to find a catsitter to care for your kitty. Getting a catsitter is a smart choice. Vets say that many cats do better staying at home than in a kennel.¹ Often, finding a catsitter (either a friend or a professional) seems like a daunting task. How can you find the perfect catsitter?

1) Look for a responsible person.

Good catsitters are organized and have a great track record of fulfilling their commitments. If your friend loves cats but forgets your coffee date every second week, she may not be the best catsitter. You need someone who won’t forget to check on your cat.

2) Look for an experienced cat lover.

The ideal catsitter loves cats in general—shy feral cats, mischievous kittens, and well-behaved indoor cats. She can read their body language, monitor their health, and recognize red flags that could indicate a problem. Good catsitters are good at bonding with cats and building their trust. Pay attention to how your cats respond to meeting the catsitter—are they nervous and timid, or purring and affectionate? Cats can sense it when people really love them.

3) Look for a detail-oriented person.

Catsitters need to remember and follow detailed instructions. When you go through your list with a catsitter, does she pay attention and seem interested? Does she ask for additional information when she’s not sure? Make sure that your chosen sitter cares about the details.
