It's Pet Hydration Month!

Posted by

In the warm summer months, it’s essential to keep our kitties hydrated. PetSafe, a major pet store chain, has designated July as Pet Hydration Month to raise awareness. In the summer, dehydration poses a greater risk to our cats. An increase in activity coupled with higher temperatures means that both our outdoor and indoor cats need more water.

Is your cat drinking enough water? Here are 4 quick facts about pet hydration that you need to know.

Your cat’s body contains 80% water.

In comparison, our bodies contain only 55-60% water. To stay healthy, your cat needs to drink water frequently. Water enables both feral and indoor cats to flush toxins out of their bodies and maintain a healthy weight. It also helps prevent health problems, such as renal failure and urinary tract infections.

Your cat needs 1 oz of water for every 1 lb of body weight.

To ensure your cat drinks enough, measure out the recommended amount of water in the morning, and store it in a jug in the fridge. Throughout the day, refill your cat’s water dish until the jug is empty.

Your cat regulates body temperature by sweating.

During the warmer days of summer, your outside cat cools off by sweating through his paws. He will need to drink more water to replace the fluids lost through sweat.

Your cat needs regular monitoring.

Keep an eye on your kitty’s water dish to make sure he is drinking enough. Watch for the signs of dehydration (see our previous blog post about this here: http://undercoverpethouses.com/blog/is-your-cat-dehydrated/). If you monitor your cat consistently, you can catch dehydration in the early stages and resolve it quickly.

This summer, let’s ensure that our fur babies stay healthy and hydrated! Here’s to an amazing summer together!
